Japanese Edo period carved, lacquered and gilt cypress wood Noh mask of Obeshimi. Made in the circa late 17th century, this extremely rare piece represents the oldest form of beshimi masks, characteristically where the mouth is firmly clenched and metallic gold eyes appear to pop out of the face. The first masks of this type were created by the 13th century carver Shakazuru Yoshinari. With old kanji inscription tag on the back.
